Tips To Reduce Check Ride Anxiety

Your checkride is coming soon. It’s very exciting.

It means you accomplished quite a journey, and you are finally there!

But for many students, the word “checkride” creates anxiety and stress.

I’m sharing here my best tips I have been using over the years that became helpful to me and my students.

The WEEK before the checkride:

1. Do a mockup check ride with another CFI

When you fly with your CFI, you get comfortable, and both of you get used to each other and unintentionally accept certain habits.

Having another CFI evaluating your skills gives a demonstration of how the checkride going to be, and will help you identify areas that need improvement.

You might say,“But my CFI is great, and said I am ready”,

Well, you will be surprised to discover how many times I checked a student as check airmen in what is called "A mockup check ride", and even though their instructor said they are beyond ready, they still had work to do.

2. Create a cheat sheet

Each one of us has areas that are challenging to remember.

Why not creating a cheat sheet and simplify things?

How?

Put all the notes and tricks you have learned into one sheet, and go over it every day.

3. Sign up form-8710 (IACRA) and other documents

There is nothing worst than having messy documents on the check ride day.

Get all the endorsements and other documents ready. I highly recommend checking the FAA checkride checklist at the end of the ACS

The DAY before the checkride:

4. Do not fly or study!

Quit often I see students who cannot land their airplane the day before their checkride - ONLY from stress!

So yes.

Relax. Even though it sounds strange. you need to trust me on this one 😉

5. Sleep early

A good night = A good flight!

Checkride DAY:

6. Have a morning exercise

Release the stress from the body by exercising, meditating, or any other activity you like.

7. Eat something small

Don't come to the checkride hungry, the checkride might be longer than you expect.

Hunger tends to affect our body, brain, thoughts process, and our focus. I couldn't pass any of my checkride without proper nutrition.

8. Go over your cheat sheet

Do not expect to cover all your books in one morning, your brain is overloaded anyhow.

Only focus on the cheat sheet you prepared.

9. Stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself YOU CAN DO IT!

Remember, you got to this point because you worked hard.

You gained enough knowledge and experience. This is the reason your CFI signed you off.

Someone believes in you.

NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
